The Lake District

Kirkstone PassOur holiday cottage is situated just outside the Lake District National Park. The Lake District offers a wide variety of things to do whilst you are on holiday, ranging from a visit to a historical site to attempting it's highest peak Scafell Pike, at 3210 ft. If you want to see what events are planned in Cumbria for this year click here.

The only problem with taking a break in the Lake District is that you can't possible see everything that it has to offer. There are so many things to do that you'll have to narrow down the ones that you really want to see the most. Among the top options for your holiday in the Lake District are Ambleside, Keswick, Coniston and Hawkshead, which is one of the most beautiful villages in the Lake District. These small towns/villages are set in some of the most dramatic scenery in the lakes but they are also beautiful from an architectural and an aesthetic standpoint, as well.

In addition to those places there are many more villages and towns that you'll want to see. Wordsworth and his legacy have a big influence on the Lake District, as does Beatrix Potter, and the countryside is some of the most beautiful that you'll get the opportunity to enjoy. Whether you want to sightsee and do quiet, peaceful things, or whether you want to be more active, there is always plenty of choice. Take your time and plan your break so that you won't miss out and you get to see everything that you want to during the time you're here.

Langdale Pikes

The time of year you choose to visit the Lakes is often an important consideration. Whether you want to see the displays of rhodedendrons, gorgeous autumn colours or swathes of Daffodils in spring. There is a field of them in Rydal next to St. Mary's Church. It's called Dora's Field, and Wordsworth and his wife planted it to remember their daughter, Dora, when she passed away back in 1847. Rydal Mount was Wordsworth's home from 1813 until he died, and when you visit it you can see his garden and his study.

Muncaster Castle

Set in the dramatic grandeur of the Lakeland Fells, the wild, woodland gardens are home to an incredible collection of rare and beautiful plants. Muncaster Castle offers many fantastic Lake District Attractions within its grounds. It is home to the World Owl Centre has more than 40 different types of magnificent Owls on display for you to wonder and enjoy. Miles of paths wind through this extraordinary scenery, which also provides cover for a varied wildlife population. Many of the plants in the gardens are now highly endangered in their native habitats. Thousands of specimens, particularly from China and the Far East, have been grown from seed collected on recent expeditions around the turn of the third Millennium. British plants too flourish in abundance, and the bluebells in the high woods should not be missed in late April and early May.

No matter what time of year you visit, there is always something in flower and new discoveries to be made. And the highlight: the view from the Castle and Terrace is truly the 'Gateway to Paradise' as described by John Ruskin. The gardens are especially colourful during May and June when the Rhododendrons are in full bloom, add Muncaster Castle to your list of Places to Visit Lake District.
